The CEO and founder of social network giant, Facebook, has a busy week ahead of him. Andrew Rivkin notes that not only was it Mark Zuckerberg’s 28th birthday yesterday, his company will be filling their IPO on Friday. The company, which was founded by Zuckerberg in his Harvard dorm room, raised the target range to between $34 and $38 per share in response to strong demand, from $28 to $35. Andrew Rivkin notes that the share price would value Facebook at roughly $93 billion to $104 billion, rivaling the market capitalization of Internet powerhouses such as Amazon.com Inc, and exceeding that of Hewlett-Packard Co and Dell Inc combined. With over 900 million users, the social networking website has created a culture of its own.

Founded in 2004, in Zuckerberg’s Harvard dorm room, Facebook, originally called Facemash began as a simple “hot or not” game for Harvard students. Andrew Rivkin along with his brother Mark, founded the leading company in online gambling, Cryptologic, from their parents basement. This goes to show that some of the most successful ideas begin out of nowhere. Facebook who recently acquired online photo-sharing service, Instagram, for a mere $1 billion dollars has valued itself at around $100 billion dollars. With nearly 15 percent of the worlds total population using the social networking service, it is no wonder why they value themselves at that amount.

According to Andrew Rivkin, in the biggest-ever IPO to emerge from the Silicon Valley, Facebook will raise $12.1 billion based on the mid-point price of $36 and the 337.4 million shares on offer, or 12.3 percent of the company. At this mid-point, Facebook would be valued at roughly 27 times its 2011 annual revenue, or 99 times earnings. Andrew Rivkin recalls when Google Inc went public in 2004 at a valuation of $23 billion, it was valued at 16 times revenue and 218 times earnings. Apple, meanwhile, went public in 1980 at a valuation of 25 times revenue and 102 times earnings. Both Google Inc. and Apple have had huge success and Andrew Rivkin believes that part of the market success of these technology giants was there optimistic valuation at the time of there IPO.

Andrew Rivkin will be watching the stock markets closely on Friday to analyze the effect of Facebook’s IPO.

A renewed focus has been paid to the Port Lands in Toronto, an empty site just east of the downtown core where revitalization and development will soon take place, and Andrew Rivkin is excited to have his say and see the city’s waterfront change for the better.

A view of the Port Lands Andrew Rivkin has grown up with, one that will change in the coming years and decades

The massive underutilized industrial area with extensive waterfront access conveniently located close to downtown is an unprecedented future development opportunity, and Andrew Rivkin, having lived in Toronto for much of his life, is relived and motivated to be involved in a significant change.

The Port Lands is a 400 hectare (988-acre) district bounded by the Keating Channel/Don River and Lake Shore Boulevard in the north, the Toronto Inner Harbour in the west, Ashbridges Bay in the east and Lake Ontario and Tommy Thompson Park in the south. This extensive, underutilized area presents an unprecedented opportunity for waterfront revitalization. Much of the Port Lands is publicly owned and is within a 30 minute walk of downtown Toronto. The southern portion of the Port Lands is bordered by Lake Ontario and much of it is used formally and informally as recreational space.

The Port Lands are man-made and were created by decades of infilling what was once the largest wetland on the Great Lakes. Beginning in the 1880s, the area was gradually filled in to make more land available for industry and shipping. Since it was created, most of the Port Lands have been utilized for industrial uses and the majority of the area currently lacks servicing for other uses. Much of the area is also in the flood plain of the Don River and flood protection must be created before the area can be fully developed.

Given the size and numerous challenges with the area, revitalization of the Port Lands is a long term initiative, but it begins now with public consultation and discussions. Rivkin, a successful entrepreneur and businesses, as well as an engaged Torontonian, is excited to participate in the process.

It is a enormous undertaking, one that should bring great pride and rejuvenation to a part the biggest city in Canada, and one that Andrew calls home.

Andrew Rivkin’s passion for music and media led him to get involved with Mood Media, a leading in-store media company offering the best of a wide range of audio and video products.

At the moment, Andrew Rivkin is a consultant for Mood Media located in the city of Toronto, Ontario. Rivkin gained important and valuable experience for his current role when he founded Cryptologic in 1995, one of the largest and most successful developers of online gaming software. Rivkin also co-founded FUN Technologies, proving again that he is at the forefront of understanding and realizing ways in people can use technology securely and for enjoyment.

Formerly known as Fluid Music Canada Inc, Mood Media delves into ways technology enhances the senses, and the ways in which people respond positively to different forms of communication.

Andrew Rivkin has turned his hobby and love into work, creating new ways to experience music and media

One of those ways is digital signage, which is quickly becoming an integral part of a brand’s communications mix. It isoften used to create retail theatre and promote at the point-of-purchase. Advertising across a digital signage network can increase sales by up to 22%.

Music is one of Andrew’s passion, and not just listening to tunes with friends, but discovering ways in which music can be best experienced. At Mood, Trusonic is the fruition of great music and web technology and today is the leading specialist of in-store music and messaging across 3 continents. Branded music and messaging is a powerful media for improving shopper experiences and keeping staff members happy. The right music keeps customers in-store for longer which means more sales.

Mood Media has a dedicated team of radio DJ’s, producers and script writers who work with more than 100 brands to produce their totally bespoke and branded radio station. Leading food retailers often utilise this media channel to promote product, communicate key messages and entertain as shoppers browse the aisles. Advertising on in-store radio can lead to a sales uplift of up to 40%.

One item that Rivkin is particularly intrigued by is scent marketing. Scent service transforms the perception of your brand identity and environment. Carefully selected fragrances create strong, positive links to your brand and environment that live with consumers long after they have left your business.

Studies conducted by Mood Media show that the key factors consumers consider when evaluating a commercial experience are odour, cleanliness, space and music. A good experience at this level could make the difference between customers returning or not, so making sure this experience is the right one requires expert advice and technology. The feelings of well being and harmony that are generated from the fragrances we encounter make us react without thinking, subtly altering our perception of time, and majorly influence our experience.

At Mood Media, Andrew Rivkin and his colleagues pride themselves on our ability to provide services that enhance business environments. They utilise the power of smell, sight, and sound stimulation to create a specific brand for any business. Andrew Rivkin has a track record of success appealing to people, and he continues that at Mood Media, enhancing the harmony of a brand experience.

PROFIT Magazine recently published an article on Canadian entrepreneur Lorne Abony. Currently, the CEO of Toronto-based Mood Media Corp., Abony has grown the company to be a leader in the rapidly expanding business of in-store media. Mood Media is also Canada’s Fastest-Growing Company. In 2010, Mood’s sales hit almost US$145 million-up by 72,384% since 2005.

Abony was born in Toronto to immigrant parents, and was raised by a single mom in subsidized housing. His attitude of a Type A achiever along with hard work have made him one of Canada’s most successful entrepreneurs. Over the course of the years, Abony has acquired some notable claims to fame including being the youngest CEO of a TSX-listed company.

Several of Mood Media’s top people built earlier businesses with Abony-most notably, Andrew Rivkin. Friends since high school, the two have worked together since the mid-’90s, when Abony co-founded online pet supplies retailer Petopia and Rivkin launched Cryptologic, a developer of online gaming software that topped the PROFIT 200 in 2002. They helped each other with those ventures, and when Abony sold Petopia to Petco, he joined Rivkin at Cryptologic. “Whatever our titles, we’re partners,” says Rivkin, who’s officially a consultant to Mood Media but is intimately involved in the business. “Lorne does a better job at the external-facing functions. The numbers-related stuff, I do better.”

Back in 2002, after stepping away from Cryptologic’s management, Abony and Rivkin started a new company developing online card, arcade and other casual games. Five years, five rounds of equity financing and seven acquisitions later, FUN Technologies was the dominant player in the industry, worth almost $500 million when U.S. giant Liberty Media acquired it in 2007.

Throughout the years both Abony and Rivkin have partnered to create multiple successful enterprises.

It is out with the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan and in with Bell Canada (BCE Inc.) and Rogers Communication. Nearly two weeks ago, Andrew Rivkin along with millions of Torontonians woke-up to news that Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment (MLSE) had new owners. Rogers Communication who already own the Rogers Centre and the Toronto Blue Jays, joined forces with rival communications company Bell Canada to purchase a 75 percent stake in MLSE. Toronto philanthropist Larry Tanenbaum increased his stake in MLSE by purchasing an additional four percent for a total share of 25 percent. He remains the chairman of MLSE.

Bell Canada president and CEO George Cope, left, MLSE chairman Larry Tanenbaum, centre, and Rogers Communications president and CEO Nadir Mohamed

Andrew Rivkin is impressed with the purchase price of $1.32 billion for the 75 percent stake. MLSE owns the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Toronto Raptors, the Toronto Marlies (AHL) and Toronto FC (Major League Soccer). While these teams might not have the most wins, Rivkin notes that they have immense economical value. With the Toronto Maple Leafs being the highest valued franchise in the National Hockey League along with having the largest operating profits of any team since the lockout, both media giants have good reason to purchase MLSE.

When Andrew Rivkin first heard of the deal, he was surprised that two media corporations who both have rights to broadcast various games in Toronto could come together to form an agreement. Rivkin was put to ease when he heard that Bell and Rogers had agreed on a deal to take all the content – four teams, with radio, television, broadband and mobile – and split it right down the middle.

It will be interesting to see if any action is taken regarding Bell Canada’s minority interest in the Montreal Canadiens. The minority interest raises questions about conflict of interest, which is an ownership rule in the NHL. As of now no official action has been taken, but sources say that there is a waiver that can be granted by the NHL’s board of governors to approve the ownership.

In any case, Andrew Rivkin does not think that the new ownership will have any effect on the Maple Leafs or Raptors performance, but is a welcome change nonetheless.

Toronto be the main site for the 2015 Pan Am Games

As a passionate follower of sports, and a lover of competition, Andrew Rivkin embraces international events where amateur athletes represent their countries and vie for gold. While the Olympics will often gain all the attention, Rivkin is a fan of another international event, one that is in fact bigger than the Winter Olympics, and that’s the Pan-Am Games. In the summer of 2015, the Pan-Am Games will descend on Toronto in one of the most anticipated event’s in the city’s history.

The Pan American Games is a multi-sport event between competitors from all nations in Americas, held every four years in the year before the summer Olympic Games. The idea of holding a Pan American Games grew from the Central American Games which were first organized in the 1920s. In 1932, a first proposal was made for Pan American Games, and the Pan American Sports Organization was established. The first games were scheduled to be staged in Buenos Aires in 1943, and since then, the Games have been held every four years, with participation at the most recent event at over 5,000 athletes from 42 countries.

Toronto will display it's athletics and culture in 2015.

Andrew, however, is particularly exciting for the upcoming games in 2015. The 2015 Pan American Games, officially the XVII Pan American Games, will be a major international multi-sport event that will be held from July 10–26, 2015 in Toronto, Ontario. The city has already begun to get ready for the exciting event, with construction and re-development projects sprouting up around the city, offering new sports facilities, housing, and public places.

While some events will be held in the suburbs of Ajax, Barrie, Brampton, Hamilton, and manyothers, Toronto will be the centre and the face of the event.. Approximately 8,000 athletes from 41 nations are expected to participate in 48 sports. Both the Pan American and Parapan American Games are being organized by the Toronto 2015 Organizing Committee (TO2015OC). The 2015 Pan American Games will become the third Pan American Games hosted by Canada and the first by the province of Ontario. Previously, Canada hosted the 1967 Pan American Games and the 1999 Pan American Games both in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The 2015 Parapan American Games will be held 10 days after the Pan American Games.

Toronto will become one of the most populous cities to ever hold the Pan American Games. The opening and closing ceremonies will be held at Rogers Centre, which will be upgraded for the games. Some of the competition venues in the Toronto area included the Air Canada Centre, BMO Field, the Pan American Field Hockey Centre, the Direct Energy Centre and Roy Thomson Hall.

When the city was selected, it was a proud day for Torontonians and truly all Canadians. Andrew Rivkin looks forward to cheering on his country’s athletes in person as they represent Canada on home soil, and looks to enjoy the attention and growth Toronto will experience across the summer of 2015.

Besides getting an NHL team for the first time since 1996, residents of Winnipeg have another reason to celebrate. Officially opened this past Sunday, October 30, the James Armstrong Richardson International Airport has a brand-new terminal. Designed by Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects, the new terminal is the greenest one in Canada. The terminal, which draws design inspiration from Manitoba’s vast prairies and sky, will be the first freestanding airport building in Canada to be Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified. This type of certification provides verification that the structure was designed and built using strategies intended to improve performance in metrics such as energy savings, water efficiency and CO2 emissions reduction. Sustainable design measures in the new terminal include natural lighting and advanced mechanical systems to reduce the building’s energy consumption. Andrew Rivkin is pleased to see that the environment played a crucial role in the design and building of the terminal.

An outside view of the new terminal at James Armstrong International Airport

In terms of physical design, the building is long and low with a floating silver roof. Skylights, an atrium, and windows fill the terminal with light. Passengers can see through the building, across the prairie and to downtown Winnipeg. These views create a strong sense of place, while views of the airfield make it easy for passengers to find their planes. Glass boarding bridges also help to orient passengers, giving them an immediate glimpse into the terminal upon arrival. Being an aviation enthusiast, Andrew Rivkin likes the added design of glass boarding bridges, a design not commonly found in airports.

As an innovator, Andrew Rivkin is pleased that the airport does not have set check-in stations. This allows for any airline operating out of the airport to use any check-in station. Andrew Rivkin believes that this updated check-in process will catch-on at other airports around the world making for a more pleasurable traveling experience.

Andrew Rivkin is looking forward to the next time his travels take him to the heart of the Canadian Prairies.

For further information regarding the new terminal please check the airport’s website:

From a very young age, Andrew Rivkin always loved playing games and puzzles with his friends and family. As he grew up, he started to think of ways to combine the things he loved with his education in business and technology. The classes he took in high school and university gave him the tools and opportunity to begin a successful career in the online world of business and gaming.

Andrew Rivkin made online gaming easier and safer with Cryptologic

Cryptologic Inc. was Andrew Rivkin’s first triumph foray into the realm of online gaming. Since the inception of Cryptologic in 1995, it has been one of the most prominent companies in the field of online gaming. Alongside his brother Mark, Andrew found a huge market for playing games and puzzles online, and marketed a variety of games for people to play and win prizes.

His endeavour has lead to several others, including FUN Technologies, another company that allowed for safe, fun, and varied online gaming for everyone in the virtual world. In keeping with the earlier theme of gaming, FUN Technologies would go on to become one of the world’s leading providers of online, interactive games, as well as fantasy sports and sport information.

There are also plenty of free games for beginners and casual gamers to play. Moreover, for experts, there are lots of cash games and competitive tournaments available to win prizes. The site featured a wide range of engaging and addictive games such as chess, solitaire, Bejeweled, and Sudoko.

The company was successful almost immediately, and was publicly traded on the London Stock Exchange in 2003, and the Toronto Stock Exchange in 2004.
